Common Energy Broker Questions

Here are a few common questions people have about business energy brokers.

What is an energy broker?

An energy broker can perform a couple of different functions, but the main one is finding you a better tariff for your business electricity and gas. Their services are primarily designed for businesses not consumers.

Beyond finding you a better tariff some brokers and can also audit your energy use and may be able to help find you savings.

What does an energy broker do?

Most energy brokers will generally have relationships with 20-30 energy companies who they will use to get quotes from depending on your energy needs. This saves you time and potentially money as you don’t have to go and get a quote from each one yourself. They should also know who has the best rates for electricity and gas respectively as dual fuel contracts don’t really exist for business.

Moreover, they can help you get set-up with a new contract and can help keep track of renewals, which means you can in theory save yourself a significant amount of hassle.

Why use an energy broker?

The main reason most businesses start using a broker is that they want to save money on their business energy. Brokers often have access to exclusive deals with the UK’s largest energy suppliers, which are often unavailable to most small businesses on their own. This is on top of being able to search regular tariffs from different suppliers.

And, as noted above a good broker can go beyond getting you a low tariff and help you reduce your energy usage, and keep track of renewals so you can keep getting the lowest rate. Plus, they don’t have any upfront cost.

Who is the best energy broker?

There is no single best energy broker. We work with a few including Love Energy Savings who have a 4.6 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot. One thing to note when looking at brokers is that not all brokers are best for each type of business. For example, some brokers focus on big customers such as factories or warehouses and other focus on SMEs.

Similarly, some brokers only focus on businesses in a particular region rather than working nationwide. In general, the trick is to look for energy brokers that have a good online reviews, then get in contact with a couple of them and see which one is a good fit.

What types of information will a broker provide in their quote?

A quote from a business energy broker will usually consist of 4 things.

  • Unit Rate: This is how much you pay for the energy you use and is priced in pence per kWh for both electricity and gas.
  • Standing Charge: This is the price you pay per day (or week, month, year) to have access to energy. It’s usually priced in pence per day. Overall, you standing charge will almost always be the smaller charge vs unit rate, but it’s still good to pay attention to it.
  • Contract Type: There are broadly speaking two types of business energy contracts. Fixed term and variable. Fixed term contracts are usually priced higher, but have less risk. Variable contracts offer flexibility, but can mean sudden higher prices.
  • Contract Length: This is how long the rates you’ve been offered above will stay good for. Fixed term contracts last from 1 to 5 years and guarantee a set-price throughout. Variable contracts usually don’t have a fixed time commitment and can sometimes be cancelled in as little as 30 days.

How do energy brokers make money?

This is where things can get a little tricky. Energy brokers provide free quotes, because they make money when you sign a new business energy contract.

This is usually done as a per kWh uplift on the price of electricity and gas you pay. Honest brokers will disclose this and generally limit it to less than 1p per kWh. Dishonest ones won’t and can add 5p+ per kWh.

However, even these can still add-up. A business using 100,000 kWh of electricity and 250,000 kWh of gas per year paying a 1p kWh uplift on electricity and 0.5p kWh on gas would spend an additional £2,250 per year for energy over the theoretical market price. On the other hand, this could still be much lower than their existing contract and the rate offered may not be available for that businesses directly.

Therefore, using a broker can still be useful. You likely will not get the absolute lowest rate both because the broker needs to make money to offer their services and most brokers don’t have relationships with all energy companies (there are over 50 business energy suppliers). But on the other hand they are free, with no-obligation and can help simplify running your business.

Are energy brokers regulated?

No, energy brokers in the UK are not regulated. Ofgem explains that Third Party Intermediaries (TPIs), which includes energy brokers:

“TPIs are not subject to direct sectoral regulation in the same way as energy suppliers by Ofgem. They are subject to regulation under general consumer protection rules, and in some cases have signed up to voluntary agreements governing their business practices and interactions with consumers.”

How many energy brokers are there in the UK?

There is no complete list of UK energy brokers in the UK and barrier to getting into the industry are relatively low. This means there is no definitive list. However, we’ve listed over 75 of the larger brokers in the UK, so we can safely assume that there at least that many in the UK.
