The map above shows where you can find the Netherlands famous historic windmills compared to where you can find today’s modern wind turbines.
While historic windmills are scattered throughout the country, modern ones are clustered very close to the coast. Although, this is not really that surprising given that wind tends to blow stronger near the coast (or offshore). Thus, making modern power generating windmills more economically viable to be located there.
However, what is surprising, given its heritage, is how little wind generating capacity there is in the Netherlands. It currently ranks 10 out of 28 in terms of installed capacity (4,341 MW) within the EU.
This less than 10% of Germany’s capacity as well as being lower than less populous countries such as Sweden, Denmark and Portugal.
Data for the location of windmills comes from OpenStreetMap.
