The map above comes from UK Data Explorer and shows:
operating renewable electricity sites over 0.01 MW listed in the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s RESTATS Planning Database extract, updated on 19 March 2014 and downloaded on 10 April 2014. Currently, some long-established hydro schemes are not included in the published extract. A list of hydro stations can be found in Table 5.11 of the Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES).
If you click on the map above, you’ll be taken to a fully interactive version.
What’s interesting to note is the geographic concentration of different types of renewable energy. For example, large offshore wind generators and solar are concentrated in the South and South East, with onshore wind and hydro in the North and Scotland.
However please note, the map is slightly out-of-date and only includes sites operating as of 2014. Conversely it also includes the Ironbridge Power Station which is in the process of being decommissioned as of November, 2015.
Nevertheless, the UK’s total renewable electricity generating capacity continues to grow. This means it’s never been a better time to compare business electricity prices by getting free electricity quotes.
