The map above shows the largest source of electricity generation by US state, along with what percentage of the total it represents as of 2018.
Unlike Britain’s Electricity Generation Mix, the US still relies significantly more on coal.
Here are the numbers of states for each type:
- 19: Natural Gas
- 18: Coal
- 6: Nuclear
- 6: Hydro
- 1: Petroleum
- 1: Other Biomass
The national generation mix was the following in 2018:
- Natural Gas: 38.4%
- Coal: 23.4%
- Nuclear: 19.6%
- Wind: 7.1%
- Hydropower: 7.0%
- Solar: 1.7%
- Biomass: 1.4%
- Petroleum: 0.4%
- Geothermal: 0.4%
Data came from the U.S. Energy Information Administration 2018 Data and it should be noted things are changing rapidly.
As for the map itself, malxredleader states:
This map is created from the most recent data which is the 2018 data. This map doesn’t look at consumption it only focuses on production. This map is shown at the lowest data level possible and county specific data is not available. The colors used in this map were specifically chosen to be both visually appealing and adapted to be viewable by most colorblind people. I am not colorblind and instead used a simulator to adjust colors accordingly. This is a new style of map for me and I’m interested to know what you think of it.
