The map above is a catogram that resizes the world’s countries by their total fossil fuel production. The data is from 2016 & 2017 and comes from a variety of sources.
The top 10 fossil fuel producing countries are:
- United States of America
- Saudi Arabia
To measure total fossil fuel contribution, they needed a standard unit of measurement. They selected metric tonnes. They then converted original figures for oil (barrels) and natural gas (cubic meters) to metric tonnes. This enables a like for like comparison.
Only the US, Russia and China are among top 10 producers of oil, gas and coal.
