Ranked: Europe’s Biggest CO2 Emitters

Ever wondered about how much CO2 the UK produces every day? Well, wonder no more because there’s a live map that reports the daily CO2 emissions of every country around the world.

This fascinating interactive map at app.electricitymaps.com lets users view the carbon intensity of a country, and ranks them by the carbon intensity of the electricity they consume (gCO₂eq/kWh).

It also tracks how much of that electricity is renewable and generated using low-carbon techniques.

We used it to rank Europe’s top ten biggest CO2 emitters in 2022 and this is how they lined up…

Out of Europe’s six most populated countries, the UK was ranked third with 236g, way behind leaders France (101g).

France’s success stems from policies put in place to limit greenhouse gas emissions, encourage renewable energy usage, promote energy efficiency, and tax fossil fuels - as well as it's reliance on energy from nuclear power.

Despite this, France is not the lowest-emitting European country though; that accolade goes to Sweden with 26g, followed by neighbouring Norway (37g), thanks to both countries making great efforts to generate 100% of their electricity from renewable energy sources.
